Brand Story

Litter-Robot is a self-cleaning litter box and smart cat care brand created by Whisker. The brand traces its origin to April 2000, when founder Brad Baxter built the first globe-like self-cleaning litter box and sold the first Litter-Robot at a trade show. What began as a practical solution to a messy daily chore grew into one of the best-known names in automated cat care.

Today, Whisker positions Litter-Robot within a broader connected ecosystem spanning food, water, and waste, with products designed to provide real-time insights for pet parents. The company says it is headquartered in metro Detroit, with Auburn Hills, Michigan as its operating home base, while product assembly takes place in Juneau, Wisconsin. Whisker also states that it employs more than 650 people, serves 27 countries, and supports over 2 million pets through its products.

Litter-Robot’s development reflects steady engineering refinement and scale. After the original launch in 2000, Baxter and Don Reitz filed a second patent in 2001 that introduced features such as a flexible weighted liner and a simple cat sensor switch. Later milestones included the launch of Litter-Robot 2 by 2005 and Litter-Robot 3 in 2015, both of which helped expand the brand’s reputation in automated pet care. In 2019, Pondera Holdings invested $31 million, and in 2021 the company rebranded as Whisker to reflect broader ambitions beyond a single product line.

Across its public messaging, Litter-Robot emphasizes convenience, safety, and long-term trust. In January 2022, Brad Baxter transitioned into the role of Chairman and Chief Inventor while Jacob Zuppke became CEO, marking a leadership handoff aimed at scaling the next phase of innovation. Together, the founder story, manufacturing footprint, and connected-product strategy position Litter-Robot as more than a litter box brand: it is a flagship cat-care technology platform built around everyday ease and better insight.
